David Alan Harvey
One of today’s most respected photographers, Harvey has taught and mentored hundreds of emerging photographers since teaching his first workshop at age 22.
He has published two major books, Cuba and Divided Soul, both based on his extensive work of the Spanish cultural migration into the Americas.
His latest book "Living Proof" documents David's intense journey into the world of hip-hop culture.
Harvey has photographed more than 40 articles for National Geographic.
His work is widely collected and in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Harvey joined Magnum Photos as an associate in 1993 and became a member in 1997.
In 2008 Harvey initiated the Emerging Photographers Fund grant which is awarded by the Magnum Foundation, a non-profit created by the the member photographers from Magnum Photos, Inc.
In 2010 a $15,000 grant will be awarded to a worthy emerging photographer from the readership here whose work is on the highest level.
In December 2008, Harvey launched BURN Magazine, an online photographic magazine and community with the goal of bringing strong photographic essays and powerful text to not only photographers, but to anyone fascinated by a visual and literary interpretation of our complex planet.
In 2009 BURN was honored to win the coveted Lucie Award for "Photo Magazine of the Year" - the first online-only magazine ever to do so.
He currently lives in New York and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
